SANTOVAC® 5
Diffusion pump fluid. A polyphenyl ether which is capable of near 10-10 torr in an ideal system. Santovac® 5 by Santovac Fluids, Inc. has extreme oxidation resistance and produces very low column contamination since it is one of the most radiation-resistant fluids available. Ultra low vapour pressure results in low ultimate pressures; there is no need for a cold trap and it is suitable for diffusion pumps. Tests have shown this fluid to be physiologically inert.
Santovac® 5 may discolour with use but it will maintain its physical properties.

FOMBLIN® 06/6
A perfluorinated polyether (PFPE) fluid that remains totally inert in vacuum pump operations. The 06/6 type of Fomblin suits most types of rotary vane pumps. Please note Fomblin is very expensive, so it is sensible to only 'fomblinise' a pump that takes a relatively small charge of Fomblin (considering pumping volume). Before using Fomblin a pump must be meticulously cleaned so no traces of mineral oil remain.
Fomblin has an almost unlimited life, and water contamination that is not removed by running the pump on baffle can be separated in a separating funnel. Just drain the fluid and pour into a separating funnel - water will float on top and Fomblin may be drained. If Fomblin is used in a diffusion pump, then the backing pump too must be mineral oil free. Fomblin should be used in the backing pump, unless a dry type of pump is employed.

Features
  • Does not react with most corrosive vapours or act as a fuel when pumping oxygen or oxidizing agents.
  • Withstands high temperatures and oxygen conditions (photo-resist stripping), processes forming Lewis acids (aluminum etching), products from sulfur hexafluoride etching, most acids, bases and oxidising agents.
  • Applications include extreme operating conditions, pumping oxygen or other oxidants, photo-resist stripping, LPCVD, plasma etching and reactive ion etching
  • Recommended for direct and belt-driven rotary vane pumps used in extreme operating conditions found in semiconductor processing.

INVOIL C (formerly APIEZON® OIL C)
Obtains the highest vacuum pressure (10-7 torr) of the Apiezon® oils without the need of a cold trap. Suitable for most diffusion pump applications, including in electron microscopes and in vacuum coaters. This is an economic and effective substitute for Santovac 5 fluid. It should be noted that the ultimate vacuum is dependent on a suitably high backing vacuum and the out-gasing of TEM film and column components. Consequently the ultimate vacuum attained with Invoil C (Apiezon® C) is very close to the theoretically much superior Santovac 5.

APIEZON® L GREASE - ULTRA HIGH VACUUM
A well-proven and recommended high-vacuum grease for electron beam instruments. Grease L is a petroleum hydrocarbon grease, containing no additives. Very low vapour pressure (@20°C of 8x10-¹¹ torr), high vacuum grade. Type L is widely used in electron microscopy where moderately high column temperatures and high vacuum requirements demand a vacuum grease with extraordinary characteristics. Type L is also used in the stationary phase of gas liquid chromatography, and may be used on all ground joints in a vacuum system (not for stopcocks). Its solubility is as follows: in ethanol at 20°C-0.003%; 60°C-0.005%; 100°C-0.011%; 150°C-0.011%. Grease L softens and melts at about 47°C and it is not recommended for joints where temperatures exceed more than 30°C in use. Grease T is recommended for these higher temperatures.

APIEZON® H GREASE - HIGH TEMPERATURE VACUUM
Apiezon® H is a relatively stiff grease which does not melt; rather, it becomes stiffer as temperature is increased. It is also a very tenacious grease with excellent cohesive strength. "Stiction" power makes this grease ideal for use with laboratory glassware and because of its excellent thermal conductivity it is also the perfect choice for the electronics industry where heat sink media require adhesion. Suitable for applications ranging in temperature from -10°C to +240°C. Optimum consistency is between 10 and 110°C.
It is specifically recommended for sealing, including medium to high vacua - depending on temperature, and lubrication, but it is not suitable for highly stressed bearings.

APIEZON® M GREASE - HIGH VACUUM
Similar to grease type L, but it contains more wax. Grease M has an estimated vapour pressure @ 20°C of 2x10-9 torr. Type M is still suitable for very high vacua but not when this requirement coincides with higher than room temperatures. Recommended for applications where a grease of moderately low vapour pressure is required, such as for sealing ground joints on the backing side of oil diffusion pumps, for desiccators and cool or cold high vacuum situations.
MSDS
We do not recommend Apiezon® M for EM use; columns can get hot and then the vapour pressure of Apiezon® M may be too high.

APIEZON® N GREASE - CRYO-APPLICATION/ VACUUM
Apiezon® N is a speciality grease for various cryogenic uses, including for vacuum sealing at very low to warm temperatures where its vapour pressure is very low, making it suitable for high vacuum applications. Type N does not craze or crack at low temperatures, has good thermal conductivity at low temperatures and is ideal for mounting sensors and other devices. It has very low levels of magnetic susceptibility which makes it suitable for some superconductor applications. Cycling between absolute zero and +40°C is well tolerated by Apiezon® N. It is frequently used as a jointing medium on cryostat flanges where its larger contact area, compared with that of indium wire, provides much better thermal transfer. Applications include cryo-systems on electron microscopes, cryostats, magnetic image resonance systems, sealing of vacuum parts including glass joints and as a heat sink.

APIEZON® T GREASE - MEDIUM TEMPERATURE VACUUM
Apiezon® T grease is a filled hydrocarbon grease for general sealing and lubrication in the medium temperature range. It is not suited for highly stressed bearings but excels in sticking power, is suitable for high to low vacua and is not silicone based.
It is suitable for use between 10 and 120°C and retains its best characteristics between 25 and 50°C. It features a tenacious consistency and thus extra cushioning between mated surfaces. It is superb for delicate glass joints for example.
In its lower temperature range it is suited for high vacuum applications, down to 10-9 torr; at 100°C it is still suitable down to 10-5 torr.
Apiezon® T, like other greases in that family has a strong "gettering" action. It will absorb greasy or chemical contaminants from metal surfaces. The product has no contaminating effect on electrical equipment and is easily removed by hydrocarbon solvents.
Apiezon® T has found a niche as a reliable barrier to oxygen transmission in both vacuum and non-vacuum applications.
NATO and the US Navy approve it for use.

APIEZON® AP101 GREASE - ANTI-SEIZE
Type 101 is an excellent general purpose, hydrocarbon grease, which is intended for a variety of industrial and scientific applications.
Properties
  • Anti-seize properties: AP 101 contains PTFE which confers superior anti-seize properties, providing long lasting lubrication and ensuring smooth operation of stop cocks and taps. The anti-seize properties are not limited to laboratory or glassware use, but are equally effective when used on metal equipment which may be subject to seizure or corrosion.
  • Non-silicone grease: being hydrocarbon based, AP 101 does not suffer from the problems of "creep" or "carry over" which are traditionally associated with silicone greases. It reduces sample contamination and the risk of interference in analytical techniques such as infra-red and mass spectrometry.
  • Solvent resistant: both PTFE and the lithium stearate gel base in AP 101 are insoluble in most solvents. They ensure that AP 101 shows resistance to water, alcohols, ketones and esters. In addition, AP 101 resists attack from aqueous acid and alkali solutions, alcoholic alkali solutions and corrosive gases.
  • Wide temperature range: it can be used over a very wide range of temperatures, possessing its optimum consistency over the -15 to +150ºC temperature range, but is usable down to -40ºC and, for limited periods, up to +180ºC.
  • Under vacuum: AP 101 exhibits good vacuum properties, down to 10-4 torr.
  • Easily remove AP 101 by wiping it with a soft cloth. Any residues of grease can be washed away with an aqueous glassware detergent.
