Temperature variations in Incubators and
Ovens and Control options:
Thermostatic control (dial setting which, from experience, provides
accurate, reliable temperature) is standard. Alternatively, digital PID control with digital display (dial temperature and feedback temperature digital display) are available.
The latter makes a thermometer redundant.
Ovens and incubators are constructed in different ways to achieve even
temperature distribution and quick temperature recovery at varying cost.
All but the smallest size incubator and oven are available with the different
heat distribution systems. The smallest oven and incubator are supplied
with gravity convection only. Gravity convection is cheapest, though
it does not result in best air circulation and greatest temperature uniformity
within the chamber. In a given spot the temperature will, however, be constant
within about 0.3oC. Mechanical convection (a stirrer)
markedly improves temperature uniformity. Best, but most expensive, is
forced air convection within a chamber jacket. This type of incubator
may fluctuate at 37oC by +/- 0.1oC in one spot (oven
at 100oC by 0.5oC). Within the chamber, the temperature
can vary by +/-0.5oC (ovens +/- 2oC). Variations
of forced air convection systems are side, up and down draft ovens and
incubators.
Options for various temperature regulating and forced circulating systems
are available for all incubators and ovens - except the smallest, the E14
(incubator) and E24 (oven).

are used for even temperature distribution. Accurate control is obtained
with either a snap action hydraulic thermostat solid state analog instrument
or digital indicator controller. This type can be supplied with stirrer
(mechanical convection).
LARGE CAPACITY INCUBATORS
Information on incubators with a greater working
volume will be provided on request.

ProSciTech routinely sells these items below the manufacturer's retail price.
Incubators may be equipped to suit requirements and budgets.
Variations available:
G - gravity convection, thermostat temperature control
GD - gravity convection, digital PID temperature control
M - mechanical convection, thermostat
MD - mechanical convection, digital PID
FD - forced convection, vertical draught, digital PID
M and MD are available for sizes 15, 16 and 17.
Digital PID
PID stands for Proportional-Integral-Derivative control.
Digital PID may also be supplied 'programmable' or the digital control may be supplied with a computer interface for computer control.
The Yokogawa 16 step programmable PID has 1 program of 16 steps, 8 ramps and 7 dwells. Example: Start at ambient temperature (25°C, first dwell), move to 50°C in 5 minutes with a first ramp of 5C°/min. Stay at 50°C for 30 minutes (second dwell) before moving to 100°C in 5 minutes with a second ramp of 10C°/min etc.
The Shimaden 40 step allows 1 program of 40 steps, 2 programs of 20 steps each, or 4 programs of 10 steps each. Frequently used programs can be stored and used again without having to reprogram the PID.
User note - Dry nitrogen operation
EDCG Cabinet fitting for dry gas use on page E12 is required to bleed any gas into desiccators, incubators or ovens.

GRAVITY CONVECTION OVENS
Gravity convection type ovens have spiral type elements distributed in heating chamber for even heating. This type of oven can be supplied with stirrer (mechanical convection) or as forced convection and can be fitted with snap action thermostat or digital PID indicator temperature controllers.
FORCED CONVECTION OVENS
Typical instrument temperature fluctuation ±0.5°C at 100°C.
Typical temperature variation ±2°C at 100°C.
TEMPERATURE FLUCTUATION
The short term change in temperature at any position in the oven working space.
TEMPERATURE VARIATION
The difference between the temperature at the centre of the oven and at any other position in the working chamber.
A range of sizes and types is available to suit the varying requirements of individual users. Higher temperature operating standards can be met and certified tests can be made if required. Heavy duty industrial ovens are made to customer specifications.
VERY HOT OVENS
The 300°C oven designs can be modified to cope with higher temperatures. These only come with forced convection and digital PID. See table for a few examples. Other sizes in these 3 temperature ranges are available, please ask for a quote.

MINIMUM FREE SPACE OVENThis oven conforms to the requirements of BS 1016 and has a working chamber of 274 x 158 x 28 mm.
The working chamber is contained in an outer chamber, into which are fitted the heating elements.
The sensing element for the control systems is attached to the outside of the working chamber.
The temperature controller switches power to the elements via a solid state relay. Maximum continuous working temperature is 200°C. Temperature fluctuation (under normal conditions) is within 0.25°C. This design gives extremely uniform conditions within the oven, very close temperature control and a high degree of reproductibility of results.
Oven temperature can be checked by insertion of a thermometer into the pocket at the back of the oven, which protrudes into the centre of the chamber. The door is fitted with a silicone rubber gasket, ensuring adequate gas tightness, and is held in place by two captive bolts.
At the top rear of the case is the nitrogen inlet. This is connected by a copper tube passing through the heating chamber to the oven proper, ensuring that the nitrogen is at the correct temperature before being admitted to the oven. The gas outlet is from the top front of the working chamber.
Samples are placed inside the MFSO then heated to required temperature. When the samples have been heated for the required time they are removed and placed into the desiccator to cool with the nitrogen also connected to the desiccator.
The desiccator for use with the oven consists
of a welded steel case with a thick bottom to give high heat capacity
and reduce cooling time. Inlet and outlet tubes are provided at the front
and rear to allow for the passage of nitrogen.

VACUUM OVENS
Temperature uniformity within a chamber is more difficult to achieve in a vacuum - since fans are ineffective and convection currents do not form without air. In a large chamber this could result in over 10 degrees variation. Heating elements under each shelf and separate temperature controls can reduce that variation markedly. Please ask for heated shelves if you require greater temperature uniformity.
Vacuum ovens are also available for higher temperatures - 300, 350 and even 400 degrees. The hotter vacuum ovens require modifications to the window and vacuum sealing, additional to the obvious insulation, elements controls.
Only the largest vacuum oven (72 litres) is supplied with a safety polycarbonate shield. These shields are available options for the smaller ovens and they are especially recommended for the hotter ovens.
Vacuum connection on all vacuum ovens are 12.5mm (1/2") and gas inlets 9.5mm (3/8") unless otherwise requested.
Vacuum pump: All vacuum ovens require a vacuum pump. VF3-220 on page V2 is suitable for most purposes. Vacuum pump on V2
